20 -year-old commits suicide after being asked to wait for a new phone

CHITRADURGA, Karnataka: A 20-year-old youth died a day after consuming fertilizer because his grandfather refused him to buy a new mobile phone and instead asked him to wait for a few days. As reported by the police officials, Yashwant had lost his mobile phone during the “Mahaganapati Shobhayatra” in the Kolahal village in this district on October 8. After that, he had asked his grandfather to purchase him a new mobile phone.

Yashwant’s grandfather who is a farmer had promised him to keep his request, but asked him to wait for a few days after the season of harvesting onions. However, it was on October 18 when Yashwant asked his grandfather to immediately get him a mobile phone and said that he cannot wait any longer. But when his grandfather refused to do so, he consumed fertiliser. Yashwant was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital.

He died on Thursday when he was being shifted to the district hospital of Davangere for further treatment, a senior police officer said. Yashwant had been living in the village with his mother and grandparents since his father died several years ago. The officer added that the boy also used to help his grandfather in farming.
