RGNUL Students Protest Against Vice Chancellor’s Hostel Visit, Demand Resignation

A wave of protests has erupted at Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL) in Patiala following an unannounced visit by Vice Chancellor Prof. Jai Shankar Singh to the girls’ hostel. Students argue that the visit violated their privacy and was accompanied by inappropriate comments regarding their attire.

A video circulating online shows Singh inspecting the rooms of female students. When confronted by students, he explained that a female warden was present during the visit. However, students countered that university regulations prohibit even parents from entering the hostel, raising serious concerns about the vice chancellor’s actions.

The student body has demanded Singh’s resignation, asserting that a male authority figure should not be allowed to enter female students’ private spaces, even when accompanied by female staff.

In response, Singh clarified that the visit was prompted by complaints about hostel amenities and food quality. He issued an unconditional apology to the students, stating that he regarded all female students as his granddaughters.
