Remembering Rohith Vemula on His Sixth Death Anniversary

Netizens pay tribute to Rohith Vemula, a Dalit research scholar at the University of Hyderabad on his death anniversary, who ended his life six years ago after being unjustly suspended.

Vemula, a young scholar committed suicide on January 17, 2016, allegedly due to caste discrimination on the campus.

Following a complaint by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Rohith, along with four other research scholars, who were also members of the Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) had been suspended by university authorities.

The then Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya forwarded a complaint to the then Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani, who in turn asked university officials to look into the matter. 

The 26-year-old’s death triggered a huge protest, highlighting the caste discrimination on the University campuses.

The institutional murder of Rohith ignited the student community and triggered a nationwide movement, bringing anti-caste sentiments to the forefront of student politics for the first time.
