Delhi: Alleged Rape Survivor Paraded, Hit By Women Amid Cheers, 4 Women Arrested

A 20-year-old woman is being paraded by her neighbours in Delhi amid cheering, her hair shaved and face painted black, garlanded with slippers on Thursday morning.

The woman was allegedly attacked by a group of people, including women, who chopped off her hair, tore her clothes, blackened her face. Four women have been arrested over the incident, the police said.

A video has surfaced on social media, where a married woman is paraded by her neighbours on Thursday. The woman, who also has a child, was assaulted in Shahdara in east Delhi due to “personal enmity.”

Talking to media, a senior police official said, “An unfortunate incident of sexual assault on a woman due to personal enmity happened in Shahdara District today. Police has arrested four accused and probe is on. All possible help and counselling is being provided to the victim.”

The Delhi Commission of Women has demanded action and more arrests in the case. The commission’s chairperson Swati Maliwal met the woman, and claimed that the 20-year-old was gang-raped by illegal liquor sellers.

“A 20-year-old girl was gang-raped by illegal liquor sellers in Kasturba Nagar. Her head was tonsured and black paint put on her face and then she was paraded in the streets wearing a garland of slippers. I am issuing notice to Delhi Police. All the accused men and women should be arrested and the girl and her family should be given security,” Ms Maliwal tweeted, while sharing the video.

The assault was carried out by the family of a boy, who was in her neighbourhood. He had later allegedly committed suicide when she had spurned his advances. The boy’s family blame the woman for his death.

The women’s sister told NDTV that the victim is married and has a child. She had moved to a rented room after the boy’s death on November 12th and was picked up from Karkardooma by the boy’s uncle.
