Grandfather held for smothering 1.5-month-old grandson over superstitious belief

A 58-year-old man, Veeramuthu, was arrested on Monday on charges of allegedly murdering his infant grandchild due to a superstitious belief.

The horrific incident took place at Utkottai near Jayamkondam in Ariyalur district. According to the police, Veeramuthu had initially asked the help of an astrologer, who told him that a baby being born in the Tamil month of Chithirai would bring misfortune to him and subsequently his family. According to sources, the suspect had also taken heavy loans for his daughter’s wedding. Veeramuthu, who initially played innocent in the alleged murder, thought that his debt would increase as the child will grow.

Later, Veeramuthu, the grandfather allegedly confessed to the police that he killed the child following instructions of the astrologer. The grandfather was only the one, who had earlier lodged the missing complaint of the child with the police and had demanded a thorough investigation. Police is on a search hunt to find the astrologer. Veeramuthu allegedly smothered the baby to death by allegedly the baby inside a drum filled with water. The child’s lifeless body was discovered wrapped inside a cloth.

On Sunday night, the suspect got himself admitted to the local government hospital owing to health issues, police said. Based on a complaint by the VAO, Verramuthu was subsequently arrested on Monday. He was remanded in Tiruchy Central Prison.
