Mysore: Dalit man assaulted for a plate of Pani puri, Lingayats files counter-complaint

A group of Lingayat men assaulted a Dalit man over a plate of Pani Puri on last Thursday at Jayapura village of Mysuru. Later on this scuffle has turned into a situation at the village.

Lingayat men filed a cross-complaint telling the Dalit man also assaulted them back. Mysuru Rural SP R Chetan went to the village today morning and made a statement to the media citing that the cases have been registered on the basis of cross-complaints filed on Friday by both parties.

After the incident took place, the very next day local police has arrested six persons under the sections of the Indian Penal Code and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 on the complaint filed by the Dalit man.

Prasanna belongs to Adi Karnataka, a Scheduled Caste said, the whole thing started on Thursday evening when he went to have a Pani Puri at a village stall. Accidentally he dropped the plate on the ground instead of the dustbin. Murthy, Sachin, and Naveen who were at the stall started abusing me and assaulting me. This is mentioned in the police complaint filed by a Dalit man.

The village elders sent him home Thursday evening assuring him that they would discuss the matter the next day. However, on Friday morning, six men from the Lingayat community barged into his house and assaulted his family members including his mother and wife, and hurled casteist slurs, Prasanna said in his complaint. After the incident, Prasanna has to take his family members to a nearby hospital for better treatment.
