Upper caste man in UP shoots youth death for ‘disturbing sleep’

18 year old Sumit Kashyap, his family members and friends were busy dancing at his uncle’s pre-wedding function at a village in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh, when a Thakur, Surendra Singh, came out of his house with a gun and shot him dead for “disturbing his sleep,” Times of India reported.

“He [Surendra] asked why there was so much noise and fired. My son died on the spot, and within seconds, the event of joy turned into mourning,” Sumit’s father Satveer Kashyap said.

The neighbour came out of his house when the ‘ghudchadi’ function was going on. According to Satyaveer, at first he fired several rounds in the air to instill fear and then shot his son and another youth.

“There were several boys dancing at the event. Surendra didn’t like the noise. He came out of his house and shot at in a fit of rage. The other boy is battling for life in hospital,” Satveer added.

The accused, Surendra has been arrested and charged with murder. The killing in the family forced them to cut down on the wedding activities and the groom left for the bride’s village along with two of his relatives.

Saroorpur station house officer, Dinesh Pratap Singh, on Thursday claimed that the accused fired once and the bullet first struck Sumit and then went on to hit another boy named Ankur.

“The police were informed on Wednesday night. There was some dispute at a pre-wedding event. Surendra Singh, son of Kedar Singh, shot at Sumit Kashyap leading to his death. The accused has been arrested and the murder weapon has been found,” said Prabhakar Chaudhary, senior superintendent of police in Meerut.
