Government gives one last chance to Twitter to comply with new IT rules

Twitter has been given one last chance to “instantly” comply with the new IT rules and notified that failure to adhere to the norms would lead to the platform losing exemption from liability under the IT Act, the government on Saturday said, issuing a notice to the platform.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said that Twitter’s denial to comply with the rules validated the microblogging site’s “lack of commitment and attempts towards providing a safe experience for the Indians on its platform.”

The IT ministry said that despite operating in India for more than a decade, it is hard to believe that Twitter Inc has diligently denied creating a mechanism that will allow Indians to solve their issues on the platform in a timely and transparent manner by Indian based, identified resources.

The ministry added that even so, with effect from May 26, 2021, “consequences follow” given Twitter’s non-compliance with new regulations. However, as a goodwill gesture, Twitter would hereby be given one last notice to comply with the rules, failing to which the exemption from liability available, would stand withdrawn and Twitter would be liable for consequences as per the IT Act and other Indian penal laws.

However, the notice did not give a particular deadline to comply with the new IT rules.
