Lockdown in Karnataka extended till 14 June

Karnataka government has extended the state-wide lockdown till June 14 due to the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. The restrictions will be effective till 6 am on June 14, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said today.

Yesterday Yediyurappa had said Covid-19 cases are high in rural areas and steps to ease the lockdown should be carefully figured out.

The state’s Covid technical advisory committee in a report to the state government had said that the positivity rate has to come below 5% and the number of cases should be below 5,000, and only then the restrictions must be eased.

Yeddiyurappa stated they had earlier announced strict restrictions from May 24 to June 7 to control the spread of Covid-19. And even though infections have reduced, the spread of the disease is still there. Following the recommendations of experts, it has been decided to extend the restrictions by a week till June 14 morning.

Karnataka had announced 14-days close down from April 27, but later implemented a complete lockdown starting from May 10 to 24 as Covid-19 cases continued to surge. It was once again extended till June 7, before today’s fresh announcement came.

CM Yediyurappa said a second financial package for businesses and sections hardly hit by the lockdown is in work. Karnataka has already announced a relief package of about Rs 1,250 crore for those people, whose livelihood has been affected due to the lockdown.

Yediyurappa also added the state government is also set to provide more than 60 lakh doses of vaccines this month. This will allow the state to vaccinate a total of 2 crore people by end of June 30.

Karnataka’ Health Minister K Sudhakar said over 58.71 lakh doses of vaccines will be distributed to Karnataka in June. It includes allocation of over 45 lakh doses from the central government and 13.7 lakh doses via the state government’s direct procurement route.

K Sudhakar also added Bengaluru’s vaccination coverage is one of the highest among India’s big cities, with more than 28.3 lakh people vaccinated with at least one dose, or 28.6 per cent of the city’s population.
