The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) announced its new face for Chief ministerial post as Mohan Charan Majhi. He is a four-time MLA and is a firebrand tribal leader. Majhi is known for his performance in the Odisha Assembly.
Majhi, reacting to the BJP victory in Odisha said that he thanked Lord Jagannath and 4.5 crore people in Odisha, who elected the BJP into the state. Mohan Charan Majhi was a guruji at Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir, a school that was run by the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh). Majhi stepped his feet into the political field journey by becoming a village council chief (sarpanch).
“Mohan Charan Majhi is a strong and firebrand tribal leader from mineral-rich Kendujhar district. Mohan Majhi is also known for his performance in the Odisha Assembly,” says senior journalist and political analyst Jatindra Dash.
Majhi’s political career spans over past two decades. He is considered to be a loyal BJP worker and a strong organisational leader. Majhi has strong RSS links due to which he was able to work extensively in Odisha. Being a tribal himself, he has the ability to connect with the masses, particularly in the tribal regions. This is what has earned him popularity. As a four-time MLA, he has a deep understanding of the state’s governance system. He has also been instrumental in shaping the policies of BJP in the region.
Majhi to overpower BJD’s Naveen Patnaik’s 24 years of ruling
Five time CM, Naveen Patnaik did not seem to lose his personal popularity among the masses in the last 24 years. His numerous welfare schemes and outreach programmes, particularly the ones that benefitted the women, had successfully kept at bay the anti-incumbency sentiment which was bound to creep in after long years in power. It will be interesting too that if Majhi could match the stature that the Naveen led government had constructed for past many years.
