RedInk Awards: Late Danish Siddiqui Wins ‘Journalist of the Year’ Award

The RedInk ‘Journalist of the Year 2020’ award will be given to late Reuters photojournalist Danish Siddiqui and the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award will be presented to senior journalist Prem Shankar Jha, Mumbai Press Club announced on Friday, The Wire reported.

In a statement, the Press Club noted that 83-year-old Jha was chosen to receive the award for his “long and distinguished career of incisive and analytical writing.” He has held leadership editorial positions in several prominent dailies of the country and has also authored many books.

Late Danish Siddiqui will be given the ‘Journalist of the Year’ for “his spectrum of the investigative and impactful body of news photography ranging from the Rohingya and anti-CAA protests to Covid-19 and the Afghanistan Civil War.”

On July 15 this year, Siddiqui was tragically killed in Afghanistan while on duty.

2021 marks the tenth anniversary of the RedInk Awards for Excellence in Journalism, which was started in 2011 to promote best practices among journalists and encourage good quality writing, fair play, and high ethical standards. The journalism awards cover all formats from print to digital and television across 12 categories.

Meanwhile, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the awards will be held online through Facebook this year, after last year’s awards were canceled.

In a press release in October, the awards committee said, “In all other respects, including the rigour of judging/selection and the quantum of prize money, the Awards will follow the model of previous years.”

On 29 December, the virtual event will be held where the 24 winners in 12 categories will be announced. The event also features debates and interactions on the topic of journalism and the way forward, where Chief Justice of India N. V. Ramana will deliver the keynote speech, according to The Wire.
