UP Assembly Polls: Will SP support Congress candidate Unnao rape victim’s mother?

After the Congress party nominated Unnao rape victim’s mother Asha Singh, she said that the Samajwadi Party may not field its candidate against her, according to The Quint.

Congress candidate Asha Singh, while talking to The Quint said that she has been told that SP will not give ticket to anyone from here.

On Thursday, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, released the names of 50 women candidates who have been at the forefront of their issues, including Asha Singh, mother of the Unnao rape victim, who will contest from Unnao.

A total of 125 candidates were announced for the upcoming Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, which included 40% women (50 candidates) and rest 40% comprise of the youth.

“Akhilesh Bhaiya has always supported me. The party has also always supported me. I have come to know that from here we will not field anyone from the SP” she told the web portal.

However, when The Quint asked SP’s Unnao district president Dharmendra Singh Yadav about this, he said that no such instructions have come yet. “I have not yet received such instructions.”

In the 2017 assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party had made Manisha Deepak its candidate, who got more than 30 percent of the votes but then she lost to the Bhartiya Janata Party. She got infected with Covid-19 in April during the second wave, last year, after which she died in May due to corona.
