Dubai is my second home for the last 27 years – Sonu Nigam

Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam, who termed the practice of ‘Azaan’ in India as religious ‘Gundagardi’, is the latest Indian celebrity to be honoured with a UAE golden visa, Khaleej Times reported.

In April 2017, Sonu Nigam faced backlash after he wrote on Twitter that despite being a non-muslim he is woken up by the Azaan. “When will this religiousness end in India,” he tweeted. He had even termed the practice as “gundagardi”.

The singer later deleted his Twitter handle after facing backlash in 2017 saying that it was a nuisance. However, Sonu Nigam has expressed his gratitude to UAE government for granting him the Dubai golden visa. And said that Dubai, an Arab Emirate has been like his second home for the last 27 years which has Azaan, a call to prayer given five times a day by the mosque’s muezzin.

Calling Dubai his favourite place, Nigam said he is looking forward to contribute whatever he can to his best capacity to Dubai and its people.

In 2019, the UAE government created the golden visa, which allows foreigners to live, work and study in the country without any national sponsor. It also allows the same with 100 per cent ownership of their business in the UAE.

The golden visas are valid for 5 to 10 years and are automatically renewed.
