Oscar Award-winning film ‘The Elephant Whisperer’ fame has now been appointed as Tamil Nadu’s First Kavadi

Udakamandalam: Adivasi woman V.Belli of Oscar award winning film ‘The Elephant Whisperer’ fame has now been appointed as Tamil Nadu’s First Kavadi (Mavut’s assistant). Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin handed over the appointment order of Belliya on Wednesday.

Belliya has been appointed to the Teppakadu Elephant Camp of Madumalai Tiger Sanctuary, the oldest elephant camp in the country.

Belliya and her husband K. Bomman had protected two orphaned baby elephants named Bommi and Raghu in the Theppakadu area two years ago. Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Environment, Climate Change and Forests, Supriya Sahu said, “It is a matter of pride for all of us that this woman has been appointed as Kavadi”.

In their new role, they have to take care of the silver elephants. But she made it clear that his heart is with the baby elephants and said, “I am very happy”. Besides doing Kavadi work, I especially take care of the baby elephants of the camp”, she clarified. Bomman, who was present on the occasion, said, “It is exciting that the President of India visited our camp on Saturday. We had invited him a few months ago when he went to Rashtrapati Bhavan”.

An Oscar-winning film was made based on the extraordinary bond between this mahout couple and Anemarias Raghu and Bommi.
