13 dead, many critical as tempo traveller rams into parked lorry in Karnataka’s Haveri

13 people died and 4 people were injured after a mini bus rammed into a parked lorry in Byadagi Taluk in Karnataka’s Haveri district early Friday.

According to news agency PTI, the victims were from Shivamogga and were returning from Savadatti in Belagavi district after visiting a temple of Goddess Yallamma.

Among the injured, the condition of two pilgrims is said to be critical and they are receiving treatment in a hospital, police told PTI. The tragedy took place in the wee hours of Friday at around 3:30 am when the victims were returning to their respective native places.

The deceased have been identified as Parusharam, 45, Nagesh, 50, Bhagya 40, Vishalakshamma, 40, Subhadrabai, 65, Manjulabai, 62, Punnya, 50, Adarsh, 23, Roopa, 40, Manasa, 24, Manjula 50, and a four-year-old and a six-year-old boy whose names have not been revealed. The victims went to the temple to do a pooja of the tempo traveller that had just been bought by the family.

Pictures of the tempo traveller and completely rammed lorry are shared online. Both the vehicles have been damaged heavily especially the tempo traveller, where the pieces of the latter vehicle was scattered on the Pune-Bangalore National Highway. According to few reports the driver of the tempo traveller may have slept while driving the vehicle. Police have lodged a case and further investigation is underway.
