18 feared dead as speeding bus rams over milk tanker in Unnao

As many as 18 people were killed and 19 people were injured on Wednesday after a bus after a double-decker bus rammed into a milk tanker on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway in Unnao in Uttar Pradesh.

According to Unnao District Magistrate Gaurang Rathi, the bus was travelling from Motihari in Bihar to Delhi. While travelling, the bus had struck the milk tanker from behind near Garha village. Sources said that the impact of the accident was such that the bus was crushed into pieces and people flung out of the vehicle. Police and other emergency officials rushed to the spot and took the victims to the hospital. Several photos and videos of the accident were circulated widely that showed twisted scraps of metal, shattered glass of the vehicles and debris of the destroyed possessions.

While the cause of the crash is still under probe, officials suggest that according to the preliminary reports, the bus was over speeding, according to the DM Gaurang Rathi. The PMO announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of the deceased, and Rs 50,000 for the injured victims.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took to platform X (formerly known as Twitter), expressing his grief over the accident. “My deepest condolences are with the grieving families. District officials have been instructed to expedite relief efforts at the site,” the CM added. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak arrived to the accident spot later that day to oversee the arrangements on the ground. According to Pathak, most of the injured hailed from Bihar. He said that efforts are underway and the police and rescue team are coordinating with the Bihar government.
“Injured are being shifted to higher-level hospitals. All hospitals close to Unnao are being put on alert. The trauma centre of KGMU [in Lucknow] is on alert,” Pathak said.
