456 farmers committed suicide in the state; Solution for only 354 cases

This year the state is facing drought. Farmers are distressed due to a lack of crop yield. Many are in trouble as they cannot repay the loans they have taken for agriculture.

Out of 236 taluks of the state, 223 taluks have been declared drought-prone. Meanwhile, a total of 456 farmers have reportedly committed suicide from April to November 2023 due to debt.

It is learned that out of these 456 farmer suicide cases registered in the last seven months, 354 cases are eligible for compensation. 5 lakh to the eligible victim families.
Compensation and Rs 2,000 per month. Government sources said that the pension will be given.

Among the farmers who committed suicide, 259 farmers are from North Karnataka. In that too, 61 farmers committed suicide in the Haveri district, which ranks first in farmer suicides. Elsewhere, 56 farmers committed suicide in Belgaum district and 49 in Chikkamagalur, which followed.

In the last financial year (from April 2022 to March 2023), 968 farmers committed suicide. Out of them, 849 affected families were reportedly compensated.

Farmers are suffering due to drought this year. Many are committing suicide due to debt. Thus, farmers’ organizations have demanded that the banks waive the entire loan of the farmers.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that interest will be waived off for farmers who pay principal in bank loans.
