6000 NGOs including Mother Teresa’s charity, Oxfam, Jamia Millia lose FCRA licence

Home Ministry said,6000 NGOs and other organizations expired their Foreign Contribution Regulation Act licences in India.

IIT Delhi, Jamia Milia Islamia, Oxfam India, Indian Medical Association and Nehru Memorial Museum and Library are among the entities whose FCRA registration deemed to have ceased on the first day of 2021.

According to Union government, these entities either did not apply for renewal of their FCRA licence or the Union Home Ministry rejected their applications.

The FCRA registration is mandatory for any association and NGO to receive foreign funding.

According to NDTV, of the 18,778 organisations whose Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act licences were due to expire between September 29, 2020, and December 31, 2021, 12,989 had applied for renewal. 5,789 – whose licenses expired on 31 December 2021- had not and their FCRA registrations lapsed overnight.

The applications of 179 groups including Mother Teresa’s charity, have been rejected, and scrutiny of the other applications is ongoing, the Home Ministry said.

The development came days after Missionaries of Charity, founded by Mother Teresa, asked all its centres on Monday to not operate the organisation’s foreign contribution accounts after the home ministry refused to renew the permission to receive funds from abroad.

Among those organisations whose FCRA registration ceased were Medical Council of India, Emmanuel Hospital Association, which runs over a dozen hospitals across India, Tubercolosis Association Of India, Vishwa Dharamayatan, Maharishi Ayurveda Pratishthan, National Federation Of Fishermen’s Cooperatives Ltd.

The Hamdard Education Society, Delhi School Of Social Work Society, Bhartiya Sanskriti Parishad, DAV College Trust and Management Society, India Islamic Cultural Centre, Godrej Memorial Trust, The Delhi Public School Society, Nuclear Science Centre in JNU, India Habitat Centre, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Delhi College of Engineering and All India Marwari Yuva Manch are also among these entities, PTI reported.
