After HC order, political activities intensifies for Corporation polls

Aspirants are hoping that they will get chance to contest and become Corporator

BIJAPUR; 15 Dec:  After the recent High Court order to the government to hold elections for Bijapur City Corporation within three months, the political activities in the city have suddenly intensified among the party leaders and ticket aspirants.

Interestingly,  the city corporation has been working without the elected body for over 16 months after the end of the tenure of the previous body.

In 2013, the previous government had upgraded Bijapur City Municipal Council to Corporation, but after the end of the tenure, the election could not be held for over 16 months because of legal disputes and Covid pandemic.

A few former corporators had filed petitions before the Court against the reservation system announced by the government. They had alleged that the reservation has been done unscientifically.

Now, after the HC directed the government to hold the elections within three months, the government will now have no choice but to prepare for the polls, at the same time the political activities get intensified locally.

There have been common allegations being heard from the general public and the elected representatives that, in the absence of the elected representatives, the officials are ruling the roost and people have no person to demand for development works.

“ If we have elected a corporator for our ward, we can directly meet him/her regarding any development works of our areas such as road, sanitation etc. But since we have no corporators, we have no one to ask for these works. For everything we have to keep visiting the Corporation office and meeting the Commissioner.  Since the commissioner can’t handle everything alone, even visiting him does not make much difference. Similarly, we can’t keep on  meeting MLA for the local work as he has no time for these issues”, said Srikant Kanadali, a resident here.

He is happy that at least the election would be held shortly which will allow the people to have representatives to ask for development works.

While the people are happy, the aspirants are jubilant and worried at the same time.

Since the government is yet to announce the ward wise reservation, the aspirants are apprehensive about their future as they fear of losing the chance of contesting if they ward from which they are wishing to contest, does not fall under the same reservation category.

In case, the aspirant belongs to general category, and the ward is reserved for woman or SC or SC woman, then the male aspirant of general category cannot contest.

Some insiders of different political parties say that the aspirants are now putting pressure on the government through MLAs and MPs to ensure that ward wise reservation is made to suit their needs.

Even the local leaders are reportedly trying to get the reservation of their choice to give tickets to their follower for ensuring his/her victory.

Now, it is only the next ward wise reservation that will clear the air as to who will get the chance to contest the polls and whose dream will get shattered.
