‘AI’ is not a researcher: UK Supreme Court

London: To get a patent for any research, a human being or an organization must have done the research. Britain’s Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that research done with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) or machines cannot be patented.

“Artificial intelligence cannot be considered a researcher”, Justice David Kitchin said in his ruling.

American computer scientist Stephen Thaler has applied to the UK’s Intellectual Rights Office (IPO) for patent registration for his inventions using a “the creative machine” named “DABUS”, which works with artificial intelligence.

The IPO had rejected Stephen’s application because artificial intelligence could not be considered a researcher.

Stephen had approached the Supreme Court challenging the IPO order.
