Assam Flood Crisis Worsens, Affecting 1.65 Million People Across 29 Districts

Guwahati (PTI): The flood situation in Assam has deteriorated, impacting over 1.65 million people across 29 districts, with major rivers exceeding danger levels. An alert has been issued for Kamrup (Metro) as the Brahmaputra, Digaru, and Kollong rivers rise above the red mark, flooding vast areas.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will visit affected areas in Maligaon, Pandu Port, and Temple Ghat in Guwahati on Thursday to assess the situation. Following a meeting with District Commissioners, Sarma directed the liberal distribution of relief, completion of rehabilitation claims by August 15, and provision of accurate information for adequate relief.

Cabinet ministers will camp in flood-affected districts for three days starting Thursday. The death toll from this year’s floods, landslides, and storms has risen to 56, with three missing. Severely affected districts include Barpeta, Dhubri, and Darrang. Major rivers and tributaries continue to flow above danger levels.
