Congress MP Tharoor, journalist Sardesai moves SC for relief

New Delhi: Congress Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor and several senior journalists, including Rajdeep Sardesai, have moved the Supreme Court for a relief in cases registered against them in Delhi and Haryana for allegedly spreading disharmony through malicious tweets over Republic Day violence.

Cases under the charges of sedition, promotion of enmity and criminal conspiracy, have been registered against the MP and journalists, including Mrinal Pande, Zafar Agha, Paresh Nath, Anand Nath and Vinod K Jose.

The petition filed by the accused says their right to life and personal liberty under Article 21 and freedom of speech and expression under Article 19 have been violated through lodging the FIRs.

As per the FIRs, they have ‘misreported’ the violence on the Republic Day and ‘spread’ false information.

Sardesai, for his misreporting a farmer’s death allegedly due to gunshot, has been taken off air by India Today TV group for two weeks, where he works as a consulting editor and anchor.
