Courts cannot administer army – Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court said that the courts cannot administer the army. The apex court made this observation while hearing a plea filed by a woman colonel who was in charge of an army unit. Usually, officers two ranks below him are in charge of such military units.

The petitions of two women officers in the Army and one in the Navy were also heard by a bench presided over by the Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud. The petitions are related to various issues including promotion.

The court told lawyer Meenakshi Arora, who appeared for the woman colonel, that interference in matters like the code of conduct and the administration of the army cannot be done by the courts. The plea was then adjourned to September 27 for detailed hearing.
