Doctors go on mass strike in Kolkata over brutal rape and murder of trainee doctor

Kolkata is in turmoil following the horrific murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor, whose death on August 8 has sparked widespread outrage and massive protests. Initially reported as a suicide, the case took a grim turn when the postmortem unveiled gruesome details of the victim’s final moments.

The autopsy report, released today, described severe and brutal injuries: the victim suffered extensive bleeding from her private parts, eyes, and mouth. The report also noted injuries to her face, neck, belly, left leg, right hand, and lips, alongside a broken neck. While medical confirmation of a mass rape has not been established, experts suspect that the victim was subjected to a gang assault before being killed. Senior police officials confirmed that the victim was strangulated and then smothered.

The shocking details have ignited a fervent response from the medical community and students. Thousands have taken to the streets, demanding justice and highlighting the perilous conditions faced by medical professionals. The widespread protests have led to a strike by doctors and public health workers, severely impacting emergency medical services across the state.

In response to the public outcry, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has vowed to seek the death penalty for the accused. She also expressed the government’s willingness to facilitate an investigation by central agencies, aiming to ensure a thorough and transparent probe into the case.

The unrest reflects deep concerns over safety and justice in the healthcare sector, with demonstrators rallying for both accountability and systemic change.
