Kamala Harris pressed the issues of human rights to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a meeting on Thursday

America’s first vice President of Indian descent Kamala Harris gently pressed the issues of human rights to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a history-making meeting on Thursday.

Harris told Modi that as democracies around the world are under threat “it is imperative that we defend democratic principles and institutions within our respective countries,” according to LA Times.

She knows this from personal experience and from her family of the commitment of the Indian people to democracy,” she said, “and the work that needs to be done, we can begin to imagine, and then actually achieve, our vision for democratic principles and institutions.”

Harris’s remarks marked a subtle change from the Trump administration’s unquestioned loyalty to the populist PM Modi, who has been in power due to an increase in religious polarization in the country with most laws targeting religious minorities, including Muslims as well as attacks on other non-Hindus.
