New Delhi (PTI): Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has approached the Supreme Court, challenging the Delhi High Court’s decision to uphold his arrest by the CBI in connection with the alleged excise policy scam.
On August 5, the Delhi High Court ruled that the CBI’s arrest of Kejriwal was legal, dismissing claims of malice and highlighting concerns that the AAP leader could potentially influence witnesses, who only felt safe to testify after his detention.
Kejriwal’s appeal was filed in the Supreme Court, according to a lawyer involved in the case.
The High Court had directed Kejriwal to seek regular bail from the trial court first, following its decision to uphold his arrest. Kejriwal, who was initially arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21, was granted bail by the trial court in the money laundering case on June 20, a decision later stayed by the High Court.
The Supreme Court provided Kejriwal with interim bail on July 12 in the money laundering case.
The excise policy in question was withdrawn in 2022 after the Delhi lieutenant governor ordered a CBI investigation into alleged corruption and irregularities in its formulation and implementation. The CBI and ED allege that the policy was altered to favor certain license holders.
