Holalkere — A controversy arose during the memorial service of Mallikarjuna Murugharajendra Swamiji held at Ontikamba Math in Holalkere on Thursday, as Panditaradhya Shivacharya Swamiji of Sanehalli Taralbalu Math and Vachanananda Swamiji of Veerashaiva Lingayat Panchamasali Peetha of Harihara made conflicting statements regarding the relationship between Hinduism and Lingayatism.
Panditaradhya Shivacharya Swamiji sparked the controversy by asserting that Hinduism, in a certain sense, is not a religion and encompasses various forms of infidelity and immorality. He emphasized that Lingayatism should not be considered a part of Hinduism, stating, “We are independent Lingayats.” He further elaborated that during the dissemination of Vedic Puranas and Shastras, the Sharanas (followers of Basavanna) rejected the Vedas, leading to the emergence of Lingayatism. “The roots of Vedic heritage are ingrained in our heads,” he added, highlighting the distinct identity of the Lingayat community.
In response, Vachanananda Swamiji defended the inclusive nature of Hinduism, describing it as “the most true and eternal” and “a vast ocean” that encompasses various philosophies, including Vedics, Dvaita, and Advaita. He emphasized the importance of unity among different sects, stating, “Veerashaiva and Lingayat philosophy may be different, but society has a future only when we all go together.” He also suggested that those who are not well-versed in Hinduism should study it further.
The tension in the gathering escalated when a devotee objected to Vachanananda Swamiji’s remarks, questioning why he spoke against Panditaradhya Shivacharya Swamiji. The situation was defused by the organizers, who managed to calm the devotee and ensure the event continued peacefully.
