Meteorological Department issues severe heatwave warning in West Bengal

Many parts of India are grappling with heatwave alerts starting from the mid of April only but some places have recently received heatwave warning from the Indian Meteorological Department. First one being West Bengal which is facing severe heat waves from the Mid of April month.

While some of the districts of South Bengal have crossed the 45-degree mark. In view of this, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has recently issued a warning of severe heat wave in some districts of south Bengal with the day temperature crossing the 45 degrees Celsius mark at Panagarh in West Burdwan earlier this week.

On Wednesday, severe heatwaves were reported from Sagar Island and Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas, Haldia in East Midnapore and Panagarh. It should also be noted that East Midnapore and South 24 Parganas are coastal districts. While on the other hand, the highest temperature during the daytime was recorded at Panagarh. It was recorded at 42.7 degrees Celsius, which was 6.6 degrees above normal. There were several other stations such as Malda, Balurghat, Uluberia, Kolkata, Canning, Magra, Burdwan, Midnapore, Barrackpore, Kalaikunda, and Suri experienced heat waves.

The experts from IMD have also said that there will be mainly dry winds from west and north-west India at lower level that will continue to blow over the region. Weather experts have said that the heat wave conditions are likely to prevail over these districts till around April 28.

“Severe heat wave conditions may hit one or two places in the districts of East Midnapore, West Midnapore, West Burdwan, Jhargram, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and Bankura till around Sunday. Heat wave conditions is expected to prevail over the other districts,” an expert said.
