Maldives: Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) candidate Mohammad Muizu has been elected as the new President of Maldives.
Muizhu, who is pro-China, won Saturday’s presidential election against incumbent President Ibrahim Solih with 53 percent of the vote.
After winning the election, Muizu ordered the government to release former president Abdullah Yameen, who is serving an 11-year prison sentence for corruption.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Muizhu on his presidency. “India is committed to strengthening India-Maldives bilateral relations and enhancing overall cooperation in the Indian Ocean region”, he tweeted.
