Rains causes havoc, kills many in Northern and Eastern India

At least 50 people have died in northern and eastern India over the past three days due to floods and landslides brought on by heavy monsoon rains, officials said on Sunday. As rescue teams raced to evacuate survivors, the rains overran hundreds of towns, destroying homes and leaving families stranded.

At least 36 people have died in the previous three days in the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh due to heavy rains, landslides, and flooding, a state government official told Reuters.

Meanwhile four people were killed and thirteen were missing in the neighbouring hilly state of Uttarakhand as a result of the constant rain according to an official government release. And at least six people have died in Odisha according to officials.

In Odisha, flooding has uprooted thousands of people from their homes and affected close to 800,000 people. Rains have also harmed road infrastructure and disrupted water and electricity supplies. 120,000 individuals have already been evacuated from the impacted areas by the state.

Authorities in the eastern state of Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district reported that the Nalkari river’s swelling waters had carried away five people on Saturday. According to Ramgarh district administrator Madhvi Mishra, four bodies have so far been found.
