Journalist Rana Ayyub received a notice from twitter through an email, that her account has been withheld. She informed this through her twitter account.
Twitter said, “In order to comply with Twitter’s obligations under India’s local laws, we have withheld the following account in India under the country’s Information Technology Act, 2000”.
This initiated a sharp reaction by Twitterati with most seeing this as an attack on people who spoke against Modi or the 2002 Gujarat Massacre. As the past few days saw a series of events taking place, the Supreme Court exonerated PM Modi from all charges in the Zakia Jafri petition, and following which human rights activist Teesta Setalvad and former DGP RB Sreekumar were arrested. Former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt’s name has also come up in the FIR, who is currently in jail in connection to another case.
Veteran tennis player Martina Navratilova, responding to Rana Ayyub’s tweet, tweeted: “So who is next?!? Just awful…”
Meanwhile former CEO of Prasar Bharati Shashi Shekhar Vempati, had caimed that the notice “might be a bug or a delayed reaction to past incidents”, for he too had recived a similar email from twitter last year.
