SCBA urges India to arrest Sheikh Hasina & Rehana and send them back to Bangladesh

Dhaka: As Bangladesh faces increasing turmoil following Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President, AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, has called on India to arrest and extradite the former Prime Minister and her sister, Sheikh Rehana. Speaking at a press conference at the SCBA auditorium, Khokon stated, “We wish to maintain positive relations with India. Please arrest Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, who have fled, and return them to Bangladesh.”

Khokon, who also serves as the joint secretary general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), accused Hasina of causing numerous deaths in the country. He further demanded the resignation of Supreme Court judges involved in political activities and corruption, along with state law officers, including Attorney General AM Amin Uddin, and heads of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), all of whom were appointed by Hasina’s government.

Additionally, Khokon called for the release of political prisoners. The situation in Bangladesh has grown increasingly unstable since Sheikh Hasina tendered her resignation on August 5 amid widespread protests, which began with student-led demonstrations against a government job quota system and escalated into broader anti-government unrest.

Earlier in the day, President Mohammed Shahabuddin announced the dissolution of the country’s parliament to pave the way for an interim administration. Meanwhile, BNP chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was released, and Sheikh Hasina reportedly arrived in India, though her next destination remains unclear.

In a related development, leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Dhaka have proposed an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus to address the nation’s ongoing crisis.
