Shaheen Shah Afridi is the new captain of Pakistan cricket team

After Babar Azam stepped down as the captain of the Pakistan team after a disappointing performance in the World Cup, fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has been appointed as the new captain.

Pakistan Cricket Board has tweeted about this, Shaheen Shah Afridi has been appointed as the captain of the T20 team. Shaun Masood will captain the test. The appointment came after Babar Azam announced that he would step down from all forms of leadership. But the PCB is yet to announce who will be the ODI captain.

PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf and Babar Azam today met at the PCB headquarters in Lahore to discuss various issues including World Cup performance. Bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi is the son-in-law of former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi.

Babar was asked to continue as Test captain. But he denied it. PCB will respect his decision. Hence, he is relieved of the captaincy of white-ball cricket. We are going to support him to grow as a player,” Pakistan Cricket Board President Zaka Ashraf said.

Under Babar’s leadership, the Pakistan team failed miserably in this World Cup and was heavily debated in the sports world. Out of the 9 league matches played in the World Cup, they lost 5 and won only 4. Thus, they failed to reach the semi-finals with the 5th place in the standings.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has said that it will announce the new coaching staff for the upcoming series in Australia and New Zealand in due course.
