Hangzhou: India’s Suthirtha Mukherjee and Aihika Mukherjee opened with a bronze medal in table tennis at the Asian Games.
The Indian pair lost 3-4 to North Korea’s Suyang Cha-Sugyong Pak in the women’s doubles semifinals on Monday. However, it was the first time in this category to win bronze and it was a historic achievement.
Suthirtha and Aihika Mukherjee shocked China’s world champion pair Meng Chen and Yidi Wang in the quarterfinals.
Despite fighting hard in the semi-finals, they lost 11-7, 8-11, 11-7, 8-11, 9-11, 11-5, 2-1. With this, India opened up for challenge in the TT of the Asian Games.
In the 2018 meet, India won bronze in the men’s and women’s team categories. This time in women’s doubles, a similar feat has been done.
