Tipu was a protector of Hindu religion: Cong MLA Tanveer Sait

Mysuru:  Former Minister and Congress MLA, Tanveer Saith has said that Tipu Sultan offered protection to several temple in Karnataka, but still some people call him anti-Hindu.

Participating in the birth anniversary programme of the 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan on Tuesday, he said that Tipu never destroyed any temple.

He claimed that Hyder Ali, the farther of Tipu had immense respect for the Mysore ruler Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar.

Sait said that Mysuru Dasara festival from 1949 to 1799 was held with the full cooperation of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. “ People should not politicise Tipu Jayanthi  for their political gains”, he said.

Countering the narrative of ‘tyrant’ and anti-Hindu words used by some right wing activists,  Sait said that Tipu Sultan gave protection to Ranganathswamy temple at Srirangapatna, situated in front of his palace, Tipu also provide protection to the temple at Sringeri mutt and presented the idol of Sri Srikanteshwara Swamy temple to fulfill his wishes.
