Umar Khalid’s bail plea adjourned; Police demand more time to file counter affidavit. Bail plea will be considered again on July 24

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has adjourned the consideration of the bail plea of former JNU student leader Umar Khalid, who was charged by the UAPA in the riot conspiracy case for leading the Anti CAA protests. The hearing of the bail plea was shifted today after the Delhi Police sought more time to file the counter affidavit. Justice A.S. Bopanna, Justice M.M. Sundaresh expressed dissatisfaction towards the police for seeking more time to file the counter affidavit.
After the Delhi High Court denied bail, Umar Khalid approached the Supreme Court.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Umar Khalid, opposed the police action seeking more time. ‘This is a bail application. What do you have to do with filing a counter-affidavit? “One person is in jail for two years and 11 months,” he said.
The court, which accepted the request for adjournment of the bail plea, initially said it would consider it again this Friday. However, the police said that it was not enough and asked for more time. Expressing dissatisfaction with this, the court moved the petition to 24th. The court informed the police that only one or two minutes will be taken for the case when it is considered on the 24th.
Umar Khalid was arrested on September 13, 2020 on charges of conspiring in connection with the clashes that led to the Delhi genocide. He was accused of hurting religious sentiments and conspiring to unleash riots in the national capital. He is in jail since then. A case has been registered under sections of Arms Act along with UAPA. Meanwhile, last December, he was granted interim bail for a week with strict conditions to attend his sister’s wedding.
