24 hrs before Independence Day, bomb blasts damage a school in Assam’s Hailakandi district near Assam-Mizoram border.

A border dispute between Assam and Mizoram on July 26 killed six Assam policemen and a resident in an exchange of fire between police on both sides.

A day before the 75th Independence Day, fresh tensions erupted along the Assam Mizoram border in Assam’s Hailakandi district when a primary school was bombed by unknown miscreants at Kachurthal on Friday night, police said.

The Lower Primary School, also known as Sahebmara LP School, has been damaged the another instance in this area after Muliwala Lower Primary School was a bomb blast by unknown miscreants in February this year.

The Sahebmara LP School, located within two kilometers from the Assam-Mizoram border, demarcated by Survey of India map, was attacked by grenades while it was closed due to the second wave of Covid-19 outbreak.

Hailakandi’s superintendent of police (SP) Gaurav Upadhyay said the latest incident took place around 11:30 pm on Friday night but no one was injured. He said: “The bombing was done by miscreants from Mizoram side between 11 to 11:30 pm. The area comes under Ghutghuti police outpost and we have raised the security immediately after the incident. We are trying to ensure that this incident does not create fear among the residents in the locality. We are also investigating the matter and once it is completed, we’ll be able to give a clearer picture.”

In February this year, unidentified miscreants used grenades to damage Muliwala Lower Primary School, forcing hundreds of families to flee the area in fear.

A local from Hailakandi said ; “There has been a series of attempts to terrorise locals by unknown miscreants from Mizoram side throughout the year. They mostly target the government buildings to create panic among the civilians.”

A border dispute between the two states led to an exchange of fire between police personnel on both sides on July 26, causing the killing of six Assam policemen and a resident.

More than 60 people from Assam, including Cachar district superintendent of police, were seriously injured. Few people were also injured by Mizoram.

Following the clashes, a 10-day economic blockade in Assam prevented transport of goods to Mizoram, leading to a rise in prices of essential goods in the state.

Both Assam and Mizoram have agreed to resolve the border dispute peacefully under the direction of the central government.
