Two people were killed and one injured in clashes between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supporters in Bihar’s Saran Lok Sabha constituency on May 21, The Hindu reported.
Saran police suspended internet services for 48 hours to maintain peace in the area and arrested two people responsible for the post-poll violence.
RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s daughter Rohini Acharya is contesting against BJP candidate Rajeev Pratap Rudy in the Saran constituency. On May 20, the voting in the fifth phase was held in Saran, and that’s when the tension arose.
During polling, Acharya, who visited polling station 118 at Bhikhari Thakur Chowk, reportedly got into an altercation with some people. Some accused Acharya of misbehaving with voters. After Rohini Acharya left the place, a clash broke out between the two groups and many were injured by pelting stones at each other.
On the morning of May 21, another clash broke out between RJD and BJP supporters at Bhikhari Thakur Chowk near Bada Telpa Primary School. In this case, a person fired a shot, the police said.
One died on the spot in the firing while the other died while undergoing treatment at a government hospital in Saran. Another person has been referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital for further treatment. The deceased have been identified as Chandan Yadav and Guddu Rai.
“Tuesday’s firing was carried out by some anti-social forces in response to Monday’s stone pelting. Two of the three gunshot victims have died and one has been sent to hospital for treatment. To maintain peace, we have decided to suspend internet services for two days,” Saran Superintendent of Police (SP) Gaurav Mangala said.
Rohini Acharya, who has given a response to this, said, “People are shocked, we want justice, they are goons of BJP, FIR should be registered. Visiting the booths is my right as a candidate and that’s why I went to the booth. I asked him whether he had voted in one of them. But they started abusing me and today our party worker was murdered,” she alleged.
