Bihar CM Nitish Kumar demands probe into Pegasus row, first BJP ally to do so

BJP ally and Bihar Chief Minister and Nitish Kumar on Monday backed the opposition’s demand for an investigation into the Israeli Pegasus spyware scandal. He said that such things should not be done to disturb and harass people and urged the whole thing to be made public, according to NDTV.

“There have been talks of phone tapping from so many days. The issue is being raised in parliament and there are news reports in the media as well. So definitely it should discussed and and the whole thing should be made public,” CM Nitish Kumar told reporters.

The issue of “snooping” using Israeli spyware software which appeared in July after reports by 17 media houses consortium across the world, has escalated into a massive political controversy.

Various parties are demanding a thorough probe into the matter and to sack Home Minister Amit Shah.

With the opposition parties coming together and pressing their demands for a discussion in parliament, hardly any work has been directed in the Monsoon Session.

Giving a statement in the parliament, the Centre has said that no illegal interception has been done. However, there has been no discussion on the Pegasus row in either house of parliament.

“Indeed, a probe should be done,” Kumar said, when asked if the matter should be investigated. “We have been hearing about telephone tapping for so many days, the matter should be discussed (in the Parliament. People (Opposition) have been reiterating (for talks) for so many days, it should be done,” he added.
