Bihar man and minor wife die in custody | A police station was set on fire by a frenzied mob

Alleging that a man and his minor ‘wife’ committed suicide in police custody in Tarabari village of Bihar’s Araria district, frantic villagers vandalized and set fire to the police station.

He married a 14-year-old girl after the death of his wife two days ago. Police arrested him on Thursday afternoon as the legal age for marriage in India is 18.

NDTV reported that the two were arrested by the police soon after the marriage.

In the CCTV video of the police lockup, a person is seen climbing the lockup door and hanging himself with a cloth.

As news of the two deaths spread, angry villagers surrounded the Tarabari police station and pelted stones at the police personnel. Angry villagers vandalized the police station and then set it on fire. At least five police personnel were injured in the incident.

Officials said that as soon as the information about the incident was received, the police personnel of many police stations, including Sadar SDPO Rampukar Singh, rushed to the spot.

However, the outraged villagers continued their protest and shouted slogans against the police.

Locals alleged that the couple died in custody due to police negligence after being beaten up. An NDTV report cited the police’s refusal to comment on the matter so far.
