Bhartiya Janata Party MP Pragya Singh Thakur on alleged that the former Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad chief, Hemant Karkare, who investigated the 2008 Malegaon blast case of which she is an accused, tortured her former teacher during interrogation.
Addressing a function, the Bhopal MP said Emergency-like situation existed when she was arrested in a “false case” in 2008, and allegedly said that Karkare, during his inquiry “broke the fingers of my teacher who had taught me in Class eight asking what I used to do (as a student).”

Thakur said that it was done to “cook up a false case and gather false evidence”, adding further she said true patriots do not call Karkare, a patriotic IPS officer who died in the 2008 Mumbai terror attack.
Thakur, in 2019 had said that Karkare died because she had “cursed” him for ill-treating her in custody. Later she apologized when the remark caused widespread outrage.
In April 2019, the BJP MP had incited a major political controversy when she stated that `karma’ killed Hemant Karkare, who led the investigations into the 2008 Malegaon blasts case. Thakur who was on bail and contesting Lok Sabha elections from Bhopal said that she was wrongly accused in the case.
When the controversy flared, the Election Commission ordered an inquiry, but the Saffron party said that the comments were personal. Later, Thakur, took back her statement saying “I felt that the enemies of the country were being benefited from it.”
The Congress on her recent remarks, has begun a scathing attack again reacting sharply on Thakur’s remarks.
However, the BJP has distanced itself from Thakur’s fresh remarks against martyred cop Karkare.
