Former IPS officer who was contesting elections against CM Yogi Adityanath arrested

Former Uttar Pradesh-cadre IPS officer Amitabh Thakur, who was going contest next year’s state Assembly elections against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been arrested by the police from Lucknow. Amitabh had announced a week ago that he would contest for polls. However, the police denied his arrest and said that he is accused in a serious case. That’s why they just prevented him from going out of the city.

Retired IPS Amitabh Thakur is charged of abetting with accused BSP MP Atul Rai by a rape victim. The victim had released a video two days ago in which she has accused former IPS Thakur. The victim and her friend said in the video that when the matter was sub-judice, Thakur intervened and supported Atul Rai. It was while recording the 10-minute video when the victim and her friend tried to commit suicide by setting themselves on fire, outside the Supreme Court. Her condition is now said to be serious.

Amitabh Thakur, announced on social media that he was leaving for Gorakhpur for election public relations against CM Yogi Adityanath. Meanwhile, he was stopped by ACP Gomtinagar around 7 in the morning. He had been to his friend’s house in Rail Vihar Colony of Gomtinagar where the police caught him. Taking it to social media, Amitabh wrote ‘The fear on the other side is too much. Too scared to let go.

ACP Shweta Srivastava says that the rape victim, who attempted self-immolation outside the Supreme Court, has made serious allegations against Amitabh Thakur. The committee probing the matter has summoned Thakur. The accused MP Atul Rai and the victim belong to the Gorakhpur area. In such a situation, the law and order can be disturbed due to IPS Thakur going there. He was not arrested but prevented from leaving, Srivastava said.
