Government ask States to notify “Black Fungus” under Epidemic Diseases Act

The Centre has urged all the States to declare mucormycosis or “black fungus” an epidemic. A letter from the Health Ministry of India has asked the states to make it a “notifiable disease under Epidemic Diseases Act”.

This suggests that all confirmed or suspected cases of black fungus, which is a condition seen in recovering Covid-19 patients, should be reported to the health ministry.

In a letter to the States, Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal has said that all government and private health facilities and medical colleges must follow guidelines for screening, diagnosis and management of black fungus.

Maharashtra has registered about 1,500 cases and 90 deaths from mucormycosis.

Rajasthan and Telangana have already declared mucormycosis an epidemic.

Tamil Nadu, with only nine cases registered till now, has also warned the disease under its Public Health Act.
