“they were taught a lesson”, Amit Shah brings up 2002 in election-bound Gujarat

The Union Home Minister, claimed on Thursday at a rally ahead of next week’s elections that those responsible for the sectarian riots in Gujarat had been “taught such a lesson” that the state has been peaceful for 20 years.

Shah was speaking at a rally in Mahudha, Kheda district, where the Congress now holds the Mahudha seat, he said, “2002, communal riots took place because the Congress people let it become a habit. But such a lesson was taught in 2002 that it was not repeated from 2002 to 2022.”

“Strict action has been taken by the BJP government against those engaging in communal riots in Gujarat and this has established eternal peace),” he said.

Gujarat experienced widespread violence against Muslims in the 2002 riots that broke out after a Sabarmati Express coach carrying Ayodhya karsevaks was set ablaze in Godhra. In the three-day rioting in Gujarat in 2002, more than 1,000 Muslims died, and the state police and the government came under heavy criticism for failing to do enough to quell the unrest. While PM Modi received a clean chit earlier thi year.

The BJP maintains its hold on PM Modi’s home state of Gujarat since 1998 and is looking to continue the same. It faces a stiff challenge from Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress. The elections are set to be held on December 1 and 5.
