India-China faceoff near Arunachal border, soldiers injured on both sides; uproar in parliament

The Army reported on Monday evening that Indian and Chinese forces were involved in a face-off along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh on December 9 and that “minor injuries” were sustained as a result.
According to numerous sources, the number of injured soldiers on the Chinese side was far more than the estimated 20 Indian soldiers.

“On December 09, 2022, People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops contacted the LAC in Tawang sector, which was contested by own troops in a firm and resolute manner. This face-off led to minor injuries to a few personnel from both sides,” the Army said in a statement after reports of the incident. “Both sides immediately disengaged from the area.”

Rajnath Singh, the minister of defence, stated to the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that brave Indian Army soldiers had prevented the Chinese Army on December 9 from crossing the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Yangtse region of Arunachal’s Tawang sector. He assured the house that no Indian soldier was killed.

He said, “The scuffle led to injuries to a few personnel on both sides. I wish to share with this House that there are no fatalities or serious casualties on our side.”

Singh’s remarks led to an uproar in the house with many MPs seeking a statement from the Prime Minister over. Not satisfied with Rajnath Singh’s answers opposition MPs staged a walkout.

Hyderbad MP, Asaduddin Owaisi charged that the central government was “silent” and “scared” in response to the clash between Indian and Chinese forces in the Tawang area of Arunachal Pradesh. The AIMIM (All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen) chief asked why a “befitting reply” was not given to the Chinese. He also declared that he would be introducing an adjournment motion in the current Parliament session to seek answers from the government.
