Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs’ day is observed on many days in India, particularly on January 30 and March 23, to pay tribute to our country’s freedom fighters. India remembers the three great heroes of the freedom movement – Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar – on their death anniversary, known as Martyrs’ Day Shaheed Diwas. On March 23, 1931, the three revolutionary freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru, were sentenced to death by the British colonial rulers and hanged in the Lahore jail. Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev were only 23 when they were hanged, and Rajguru was 22. The three freedom fighters are immortal in the heart of every Indian.

On this day, Indians pay tribute to the people who laid down their lives in the struggle for India’s independence from British rule. The sacrifice by the trio heroes became a source of inspiration for millions of Indians. It is for this reason March 23 was memorialized as Shaheed Diwas.
