Several people have raised serious questions about why Umar Khalid is still in jail, while his comrade-in-arms Kanhaiya Kumar has joined congress party.
People believe the reason why former JNU leader is rotting in jail while his comrade Kumar and Mevani have joined the Congress is because Umar Khalid is a Muslim.
Former JNU President Kanhaiya Kumar and Jignesh Mevani, an independent MLA from the Gujarat’s Vadgam constituency joined the Congress party on Tuesday.
Arfa Khanum Sherwani, a journalist with The Wire took it to Twitter and asked about Khalid, Is he being punished for being a Muslim?
“Kanhaiya Kumar is undoubtedly one of the brilliant young leaders post-2014 India has produced. On a day he joins the Congress, can’t help thinking about Umar Khalid, one of our brightest stars,a revolutionary man who is languishing in jail. Is he being punished for being a Muslim?” Sherwani tweeted.
Journalist Zeba Warsi said, “Kanhaiya Kumar, Jignesh Mevani and Umar Khalid are all similar in the sense of being a new breed of young activists. Yet, Khalid’s present situation is starkly different.”
One Twitter user, Saif Patel pointed out that Kumar and Khalid had broken into the national limelight around the same time.
“Umar Khalid and Kanhaiyya Kumar started at the same point. Kanhaiyya got invited to TV debates, conclaves, fought LS election on CPI ticket, now switched to INC; he’s a full time politician. On the other hand, Umar Khalid got ostracized and is now rotting in jail for over a year,” Patel tweeted.
Last year on September 14, Umar Khalid was arrested by the Delhi Police for his alleged involvement in the Northeast Delhi riots. He is accused of hatching a conspiracy to unleash violence along with his friends during the visit of former US President Trump to India. Khalid is accused to have met the former AAP Councillor Tahir Hussain and one more accused Khalid Saifi for alleged support during the riots..
