3 Former-J&K Chief Ministers Under House Arrest Over Assembly Seats Protest

Three former chief ministers of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday have been put under house arrest to prevent their proposed protest against the delimitation commission.

The J&K police have sealed off roads and deployed security trucks outside the homes of three chief ministers Farooq Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah in Gupkar road in Srinagar and no one is being allowed to enter or exit from there.

The Gupkar Alliance led by National Conference President Farooq Abdullah had announced protests against the released delimitation commission draft proposal of allotment of assembly seats in the union territory.

Proposing six additional seats for Jammu province against one seat in Kashmir, the delimitation commission runs contrary to the population ratio of both provinces of the former state.

Meanwhile, the opposition describing it as a blatant display of gerrymandering has alleged that the proposed seat allotment goes against the adult franchise of one person one vote.

The commission, however, has said that besides population, other considerations including administrative units, area and proximity to the border have been factored in while distributing seats.

In a tweet, Omar Abdullah showed how his home, including his father’s and sisters, have been locked and security trucks deployed outside the gates.

“Good morning & welcome to 2022. A new year with the same J&K police illegally locking people in their homes & an administration so terrified of normal democratic activity. Trucks parked outside our gates to scuttle the peaceful @JKPAGD sit-in protest. Some things never change,” he tweeted.

The supporters of the National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party held protests at some place, demanding restoration of special status. The supporters along with former legislators raised slogans against detention of leaders and the delimitation exercise, NDTV reported.

However, were stopped by police when they tried to march towards Gupkar Road.
