As many as 40 girl students from Karnataka’s Udupi district abstained from appearing for the first pre-university examination on Tuesday as they were apparently hurt by the recent High Court verdict on the hijab ban inside classrooms.
The Muslim students decided to not appear for the exam without wearing their hijab as they were hurt by the March 15 order, PTI reported.
On March 15, the Karnataka High Court had dismissed petitions seeking permission to wear headscarves inside the classroom, saying that hijab is not an essential religious practice in Islam. The court said that the uniform dress rule should be followed in educational institutions where it has been prescribed.
Meanwhile, some private colleges in Udupi permitted the girls to wear a hijab while writing the examinations, according to PTI.
On March 24, the Supreme Court had refused to listen to an urgent hearing on the pleas challenging the Karnataka High Court verdict. However, the students are planning to wait till the Apex court gives an order on the issue.
