Bengaluru: Police lodges complaint against right-wing activist over demolition threats in the Idgah maidan

According to officials on Wednesday, the Bengaluru police have filed a suo motu complaint against a right-wing activist for inciting enmity between religious groups and hurting religious sentiments by threatening to destroy a prayer wall built at the contentious Idgah Maidan in the city’s Chamarajpet neighborhood.

Following remarks he made regarding the Idgah Maidan dispute after the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) recently ruled that the ground is a property of the state government and not the Wakf board), the Bengaluru police have filed a case against S Bhaskaran, the president of the Vishwa Sanatana Parishat.

Bhaskaran demanded that the prayer wall built on the ground be demolished in response to the BBMP ruling, and he threatened that if the state failed to take the necessary measures, activists would demolish the wall similar to the Babri Masjid demolition.

Right-wing organizations have been trying to put the national flag on the ground on Independence Day at the Idgah Maidan in Chamarajpet, which is simply a playground used for prayers by Muslims in the neighborhood on special occasions. Muslims in the area have stated they would also wish to raise the flag on August 15.

The Wakf Board and the BBMP contend that they are the rightful owners of the property, while the Wakf Board asserts that it is revenue land. The Idgah Maidan remained state property, and the BBMP would decide how the public may use it, according to an order it issued on August 6.
